The road and footpath were closed for a short while as emergency services cleared the scene. It’s understood the footpath is still closed at the time of writing to allow for repairs.

No injuries have been reported.

A man in his 30s was arrested following a breathalyser test.

One driver at the scene, Catherine Smith, said: “It came out of Waterside North, no sign of break lights on, launched over the central barrier and crashed into the bridge.

“Two lads did a runner. If my friend and I were two seconds earlier we’d have been slammed.”
