Lincoln Grand Prix: Russell Downing claimed his fourth victory in the 57th Annual Lincoln Grand Prix on Sunday.

Russell Downing claimed his fourth victory in the 57th Annual Lincoln Grand Prix on Sunday, May 13.

The race started at the Yarborough Leisure Centre with 160 riders taking the start.

There was a short delay as last-minute safety and radio checks were carried out, then the racing got started when the riders hit Burton Road.

The big teams of Endura Racing, 100% ME, Rapha Condor Sharpe and Team Sigma Sport amongst others closed down any attempts to cause an early split.

After two laps however, the race had split into two big groups with about 80 riders taking the race on and the other half perhaps just thinking about the finish.

The race this year was back up to its full distance of 102 miles, with the last two laps reinstated.

As the laps counted down, a few small groups kept jumping off the front of the race, with Russell Downing, a three times previous winner (2005, 2008, 2009), Kristian House, Simon Richardson, Russell Hampton, Marcin Biaboblocki and the other team leaders making it look easy.

As they charged up the climb of Michael Gate, it still looked like any one of some twenty riders stood a chance — but Russell Downing had not come to Lincoln to be denied his fourth victory.

The crowd in Castle Hill cheered Russell Downing on to victory as he crossed the line. Marcin Biaboblocki just missed out and came in second place and Kristian House came in third, followed by Simon Ricmardson, Russell Hampton and Pete Williams.

Full results should be available soon on the Lincoln Grand Prix website.
