Learn or Leave: The Lincoln University Technical College (UTC) marked its official opening with honorary guest Juergen Maier, CEO of Siemens UK.

The Lincoln University Technical College (UTC) marked its official opening on Wednesday, November 25.

The honorary guest was Professor Juergen Maier, CEO of Siemens UK, who also helped cut a ribbon and unveil a plaque.

Dr Rona Mackenzie, Principal of Lincoln UTC, said: “When I was appointed in March 2013, we started on this wonderful building, but unfortunately, when we dug into the ground we found a number of historic relics that meant that there was a delay in the build programme.

“The University of Lincoln kindly allowed us to use Chad Varah House for a year, hence the delay of this building opening by a year, so it’s great to be standing here by this beautiful building and officially open it with Professor Maier.

“We have just under 300 students here between the ages of 14 and 18, around 17% are female, and they are on a range of science and engineering courses. We will have 640 students when we are full.

“The University of Lincoln, Lincoln College Group and Siemens are the three business and educational sponsors. They worked together to create the UTC vision initially and to appoint me, and then continuously support us with HR, finance and building contracts, as well as the educational delivery, and linking us to local businesses.

“Lincoln UTC is here for local business, so that is why we try to understand what businesses are looking for in their future employees.

“Our motto is ‘Learn or Leave’ – it’s taken from the side of the building from when it was a girls school, so we continued that motto because it’s very important, and that’s why were are here: to learn.”
