Six people have been arrested in connection with a fight that broke out at a football match in Cleethorpes.

Grimsby Town Football Club played at home at Blundell Park on Saturday, July 23 against Sheffield United, where a scrap broke out between fans.

Six people were arrested, four of whom have now been charged with assault, affray and public order offences and are due to attend court. The other two have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

More arrests are expected and officers are seeking football banning orders which will prevent them from attending future football matches both in the UK and abroad.

CCTV and police helicopter footage is being examined to identify those responsible for the disorder.

Officers reported facing numerous confrontations from pre and post-match mass fan assemblies across the town.

Two police officers were hurt in the clashes, one sustained a head injury and possibly a fractured ankle after bottles were thrown towards him.

Humberside Police had a match commander and additional patrols brought in to police and safeguard both the home and away fans separately.

Officers say they worked with Grimsby Town FC and licensees to ensure practical and constructive efforts were put in place.

Match commander, Superintendent David Hall, said: “No offences were reported before the game but a number of people, both Grimsby Town and Sheffield United supporters, were involved in disorder after the match.

“Two police officers received injuries, with missiles being thrown towards officers.

“An investigation is now underway to identify who was involved in the unrest and if anyone has any information in relation to the disorder call Humberside Police on 101, quoting log number 212 of July 23.”
