The Lincolnshire stars in the Team GB women’s hockey team have dramatically won Olympic gold, beating the Netherlands on penalties in a thrilling final.

The Dutch were widely fancied to win their third consecutive Olympic gold, but lost 2-0 to Britain on penalties after the game ended 3-3 following 60 minutes of play at the Rio Olympic Hockey Centre on Friday, August 19.

Lincolnshire’s Georgie Twigg, Hannah Macleod, Crista Cullen and Shona McCallin were particularly involved in the thick of the action, putting their bodies on the line throughout the tournament.

Cullen, who was earlier sin binned for an elbow, scored the equaliser to make the game 2-2 in the second quarter.

However, it was goalkeeper Maddie Hinch who produced an inspired display, defying the Dutch numerous times in normal time and in the shootout.

The team reached the final by defeating New Zealand 3-0 in the semi-finals on Wednesday night.
