Calls are mounting for senior councillors to reconsider the controversial closure of Grimsby Ice Rink.

Councillors on North East Lincolnshire Council’s Tourism, Leisure and Culture Scrutiny Panel will discuss the closure of the rink at a meeting on Wednesday, January 25.

This follows the Conservative group on the council challenging the decision of the Labour-controlled Cabinet to close the facility.

Councillors in the Cabinet unanimously voted to close the rink at a meeting held at Grimsby Town Hall on December 21, 2016.

The councillors said that the rink, which has been open since 1975, would require significant investment from the council to remain open, something they could not afford.

Protesters gathered outside the town hall to make clear their feelings at the decision.

A number of Conservative councillors have also voiced their objections to the decision, arguing that the rink is the only one in Lincolnshire and that the closure flies in the face of public health targets.

These councillors hope that a final decision will be referred back to the Cabinet for reconsideration or to Full Council for a wider debate on the future of Grimsby Leisure Centre.
