Lincoln Castle has been voted the UK’s favourite castle in an online national poll consisting of over 10,000 voters.
Holiday Lettings (owned by Trip Advisor) ran the poll which saw Lincoln Castle come out on top with 5,116 votes (43%) defeating second-placed Banburgh Castle by over 3,000 more votes.
Windsor Castle, which has had a long history of association with the royal family and a preferred weekend getaway for Queen Elizabeth, gained only 96 votes.
Lincoln’s historic landmark has recently gained national coverage over the last 12 months due to a £22 million restoration project, a new Magna Carta exhibition vault and the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln.
Kimberley Vickers, site manager at Lincoln Castle, said: “From me and all the staff here at Lincoln Castle, a big thank you to everyone who voted to make us the UK’s most popular castle.
“Our top priority is making sure our visitors have the best day out possible and experience all the beauty, stories and history that the castle has to offer.
“This award means a lot because it’s voted for by the public and we’re really happy to have support from our local, national and international visitors.”
Head of Visit Lincoln, Lydia Rusling told The Lincolnite: “We are delighted here at Visit Lincoln as a city for our key attraction to be voted best in the country.
“It is testament to the team across the city and it is important for the experience people get at the castle.
“The win has worked out well with the Magna Carta exhibition and the Domesday Book arriving and is very fitting after being awarded from an independent endorsement that is recognised nationally.”
The news of the accolade has come in good time as the castle is set to host iconic musicians Cliff Richard on Saturday, June 24 before Michael Ball and Alfie Boe perform 24 hours later.

As people prepare to go out more in the run up to Christmas, a Lincoln woman who created the globally renowned Ask For Angela not-for-profit scheme is proud to have made the county, and the world, a safer place.
The scheme, launched by Hayley Crawford (pictured above) in 2016, aims to ensure that anyone who is feeling vulnerable or unsafe is able to get the support they need. This could be on a night out, a date, meeting friends and other situations, and it is available to everyone of all genders to help them feel safer.
After a seven-year wait, Grantham finally welcomed back 24-hour care last month with the new Urgent Treatment Centre, replacing the daytime A&E service, and local residents have been actively sharing their experiences of the new facility.
The road to today has been a long and bumpy one for residents and campaigners alike, with many fearing Grantham might never have a healthcare facility that was open 24 hours a day again.
