Lincoln City’s first league cup game in seven years ended in a 2-1 defeat against League One Rotherham United.
Rotherham’s Jamie Proctor and Anthony Forde scored either side of Billy Knott’s equaliser at the New York Stadium this evening (August 8).
Danny Cowley’s men made five changes from the team that started against Wycombe, with goalkeeper Josh Vickers and winger Jordan Maguire-Drew making full debuts.
Proctor gave the hosts the lead after his 20 yard shot found the back of the net, leaving goalkeeper Vickers with no chance.
The Imps almost equalised a minute later when Sean Raggett’s header was saved by Rotherham keeper Richard O’Donnell.
Lincoln scored mid-way through the second half when Ollie Palmer’s flick on caused havoc in The Millers’ defence and Billy Knott was able to capitalise.
Rotherham took the lead for the second time 15 minutes later when Joe Mattock’s low cross found Anthony Forde who bundled the ball into the net.
Last season three divisions separated Rotherham and Lincoln, however due to The Millers’ relegation from the Championship and The Imps’ promotion, there is now just one.
The Imps are still looking for their first win of the season and haven’t made it through to the second round of the league cup since 2005 and play Morecambe at Sincil Bank on Saturday, August 12.
