Lincoln Cathedral through to ‘World Cup’ last 16

The only World Cup that matters

Lincoln Cathedral has comfortably smashed the competition to advance to the last 16 of the #RealCathedralWorldCup.

The #RealCathedralWorldCup pits some of the world’s most celebrated cathedrals against each other in a series of polls to see which one is Twitter’s favourite.

Last year Lincoln Cathedral took first place in a Twitter battle between British Cathedrals but this time it has some international competition to contend with.

It’s up against rival cathedrals from across the world including France, Greece, Armenia and even Iceland. This is what the last 16 looks like:

  • Lincoln Cathedral (England)
  • Bascilla of Saint-Denis (France)
  • Vagharshapat (Armenia)
  • Mystras (Greece)
  • Canterbury (England)
  • Hosios Loukas (Greece)
  • Monreale (Italy)
  • Ely (England)
  • Reykjavik (Iceland)
  • Ravenna (Italy)
  • Palermo (Italy)
  • Jerusalem (Israel)
  • Córdoba (Spain)
  • Aachen (Germany)
  • Trier (Germany)
  • Hagia Sophia (Turkey)

“Lincoln is a definite favourite,” said Kyle Thomas, one of the organisers, “It has a very large and vocal fan base on Twitter.”

“The English cathedrals have all made strong showings and three of them advanced to the playoffs.

“There’s a lot of love from the English for their churches and its certainly strengthened the chances that Lincoln, or one of the other English cathedrals, will take the crown.”
