£1.5 million Skegness community hub plans revealed

Designs for a new £1.5 million community hub and cafe in Skegness have been revealed.

The town’s Tower Gardens are set to be taken over by Skegness Town Council who have already had plans to demolish the adjoining Victorian-era pavilion and replace it with the new building agreed.

Documents submitted to East Lindsey District Council, the current owners of the gardens, say the pavilion is in a ‘critical state’ and is ‘structurally unsafe’ in parts.

The new building, which is a change from a previous application, would also include a town council offices and car parking – however, a museum originally planned to be part of it has had to be removed from the plans.

The documents say: “The proposed scheme will connect seamlessly with its surroundings and architecture with careful detailing complimenting but not replicating the local area and appearance.

“It provides varied elevation treatments and will interest to the northen end of Tower Gardens.

“The proposed building, whilst being a pavilion within the park scene, will site comfortably within its surroundings and not be overbearing.

“The proposed scheme provides a design solution that takes into account the sensitive nature of the gardens retaining existing site features such as trees and planting, whilst providing a new space for the community to use.”

Plans for the pavilion were originally priced at £2 million, however, a bid for grant funding failed in April last year.

In a bid to cover costs, the town council has previously upped its precept by 4.7%.
