Council set to agree £100m Spalding relief road

South Holland District Council is expected to offer no objections to plans for the £100 million Spalding Western Relief Road.

Proposals for the northern and southern section have been submitted to the authority by Lincolnshire County Council.

If planning permission is granted, the plan would see roundabouts built on the B1172 and Spalding Road. Bridges over the railway line would also be constructed.

Both of the proposals will be considered by the district authority’s planning committee on May 29 before the the county council makes a final decision.

Officials at the authority have recommended that councillors offer no objection to both proposals.

Plans for the middle section of the road have not been submitted.

The relief road would see a new route built around the west side of the town and link Spalding common in the south with Spalding Road/Pinchbeck Road in the north.

The central section of the project caused controversy back in February when the county council was forced to apologise for failing to notify residents who live in direct route of the road.

People said they had been “left in limbo” by the project, while one resident resident said the council would have to “tow him out with a chain and a bulldozer” if plans go ahead.

Executive councillor for highways, Richard Davies, apologised for any “distress” that the plans caused.

The council is hoping to get approval later this year so it can break ground on the northern section this winter and the southern part during Spring 2022.
