£1m Grantham fire station improvements approved

The build includes new accommodation and training facilities
Grantham Fire Station is set for renovation, with a new accommodation block and training building planned.

An investment of more than £1 million at Grantham Fire Station has been given the go ahead.

Lincolnshire County Council applied to its own planning department in order to demolish a former drill tower and outbuildings on the Harlaxton Road site, in order to create two new buildings.

The development will include a six-bedroom accommodation block, including kitchen and dining facilities and a garden room, for on-duty firefighters.

A new four-storey training building will also provide a more modern training facility to educate fire fighters in line with the latest practices.

Grassland to the back of the station will be converted into a 42-space replacement car park.

How the site will be laid out.

Approving the plans, officers said the build would “significantly improve the accommodation and training facilities”.

“The new tower itself would improve the on-site training facilities for fire fighters and there is no doubt that this element of the proposal would be significantly beneficial to the wider community,” they said.

They added the accommodation “would enable a 24-hour-a-day fire and rescue service to be provided from the Grantham Fire Station, improving on the current day manned service.”

The site currently holds a number of old facilities and decommissioned buildings and Lincolnshire County Council says the move will help “meet the growing requirements” of the service.

The former drill tower is to be demolished to make way for the build.

Following approval, Group Manager Dave Gilbert from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said: “We’re investing in our fire stations so they are fit for purpose and make sure we can give a great service to our communities.

“We got some great positive feedback from local residents when we held drop-in events and an open day at the station, and we’re really looking forward to making these improvements.”

Work is scheduled to start early in 2020 and be completed in summer 2020.
