Waterskiing facility in Tallington approved despite fight from competitor

Neighbouring business warned of losses if plans were approved

A waterskiing training facility near Stamford has won in a “David and Goliath” battle with a nearby business.

Mr and Mrs Moore, of Moorelake House, in Tallington, had been given permission for the training lake in 2018.

However, it was taken to the high court by the owners of neighbouring Tallington Lakes and quashed after a judge said South Kesteven District Council had not considered the impact of competition in enough detail as required by its local plan.

The owners of Tallington Lakes said it would impact on the existing business, leading to a loss of staff.

One objection said it would “lead to the destruction” of the business.

Council officers on Wednesday said the resubmitted plans for the siting of 20 touring caravans, a new club house and toilet block, in connection with the water skiing and wakeboarding facility, were different to the existing business.

William Richards said: “This facility is more of a sporting and training facility whereas Tallington Lakes is leisure and recreation. It’s like comparing apples and pears.

“There’s no substantive evidence to demonstrate that the viability of Tallington Lakes will be affected.”

Councillor Phil Dilks said a recent site visit had been valuable.

“I saw a small family business within their own premises who have obviously spent a lot of money,” he said.

“It seems to me, it’s a case of David and Goliath.”

Councillor Robert Reid said there had been “meticulous” and scrupulous” examination.

However, Councillor Penny Milne said she had “grave concerns” over future plans for the business

“I think it has been clarified that the scheme in front of us is for general water-skiing and waterboarding.”

She suggested a series of conditions in order to tighten controls, however, this was voted down and permission was given in line with officers’ recommendations.
