The Lincoln Marie Curie fundraising group is celebrating after reaching £100,000 in four years.

Marie Curie is the UK’s leading charity for people with a terminal illness and their families, helping them make the most of the time they have together.

The Lincoln group, chaired by former Marie Curie Nurse Robina Cameron, celebrated their success this week.

Marie Curie Nursing Manager Sue Smith joined the group for their celebration to give a talk to the volunteers, thanking them for giving up their time.

The group, with ages ranging from 16 to 86, has been running for four years.

Money raised goes towards the charity’s free nursing service in the county.

Robina Cameron, Chair, Marie Curie Lincoln fundraising group, said: “It’s been quite emotional, as many of us in the group have a personal connection to the cause, but we’ve had a wonderful celebration and we’re already looking forward to our next event together at Boulthan Park Gala.”

Gary Burr, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie, added: “The Lincoln fundraising group are a fantastic asset to Marie Curie and we want to thank them for giving up their time to support the charity.”

A Lincoln College student has won a placement working with the team that designs and manufactures Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 racing engines.

Sam Cordwell, 17, from Market Rasen, was presented a Student of the Year award on June 14 for outstanding performances in his studies.

Along with being awarded one week’s work experience at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) in Northamptonshire, Sam will automatically pass through to the assessment stages for the Advanced Apprenticeship programme in 2017. Sam also won £500 prize money.

Sam, who is currently studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Mechanical, Manufaturing and Motorsport Engineering, said, “I am very excited about the work experience and I hope that in the future my hard work may lead to a career with Mercedes AMG HPP. I have put a lot of effort in with my studies and it is amazing to be recognised.”

Lee Walters, Employee Development Manager at Mercedes AMG HPP, said, “It is critical for us to maintain a pipeline of talented apprentices into HPP as the future Engineering Technicians; in order to facilitate this, it is extremely important to have a close partnership with academia.”

Gavin Scott, Course Tutor at Lincoln College, added: “We work hard to prepare our students for the world of work and we have many great student success stories – including a number of students who have gone on to do highly sought-after apprenticeships at Mercedes AMG HPP.”
