Burton Road takeaway owner Des Anastasiou with the award-winning chips and former employee Matt Machin, who swears he’s Elvis

A Lincoln fish and chips takeaway and restaurant won the award for Best Chippy Chips in the East of England in the Choice Chip Awards.

The Burton Road chippy has won the title thanks to its thick cut Lincolnshire sourced chips and votes from its loyal customers.

Owner Des Anastasiou was grateful for the support and shared the secret to his perfect chips.

“We buy best quality Maris Piper Lincolnshire potatoes, cut them thick and fry them at the optimum temperature, and I’d like to thank everyone for their votes and support,” said Anastasiou.

To celebrate their success customers have been invited to sing for their supper with a free portion of chips on offer for anyone willing to sing with a former employee who swears he’s Elvis.

Matt Machin, who used to work at the chip shop, serenaded customers yesterday and will be repeating his performance on Thursday in full Elvis attire.

Machin said: “I used to sing a bit of Elvis when I was younger and Des asked me to do it for a bit of fun and its gone down really well, although only one person has got up and sung with me all day.”

For the National Chip Week running from February 20 to 26, the Burton Road chippy has put on offers giving out scratch cards with the chance to win the award-winning chips as well as launching a loyalty card.

In an effort to give back to the community, 5p of every bag of chips sold all week will be donated to St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, who provide care for patients living with life threatening illnesses.

Lincoln City Football Club will have lunch in the restaurant Thursday at 1:30pm and customers still have the chance to sing with Elvis for a free portion of chips.

Free haircuts are being offered by Lincoln College students at The Salon at The Showroom on Tritton Road over the next month.

The hairdressing and beauty therapy students are NVQ level 2 and 3 qualified and are supervised by professionals.

The Salon was opened in June 2011 and run by Lincoln College as a training facility for their apprentices. It has been providing a high quality service to residents with its modern facilities and discounted prices.

Director of the School of Business, Sue VanZyl, explains how the free haircuts are a way of attracting customers to see the range of services on offer and the modern facilities used.

“Our free haircuts offer is a great opportunity for the local community to see what students of Lincoln College are achieving at The Salon and I think customers will be pleasantly surprised,” said VanZyl.

The Showroom is run by Lincolnshire YMCA and is committed to providing opportunities for young people such as work experience, employment and social engagement.

To book your free haircut (by March 29) call The Salon on 01522 508380.
