Pupils from a primary school near Lincoln were put to the test by soldiers as part of a special activity day.

Washing borough Academy invited a team of soldiers from The Royal Anglian Regiment to demonstrate their training.

The team of seven men from the 2nd Battalion, nicknamed the Poachers, led by Lt Jack Gordon, organised a number of activities for the pupils to learn new skills:

Activities included No Man’s Land (indoor obstacle course navigated in teams), Night Raid (using night vision aids and military style walkie talkie radios, the students guided their teams to an objective) and the Kit Stand to compare WW1 soldiers’ kit and current soldiers’ kit.

The tests encouraged team work, problem solving and add to lessons surrounding the anniversary of the Great War.

According to organiser and teacher Michelle Austin, the children enjoyed meeting the soldiers and taking part in the activities.

Lt Gordon said: “It’s a real pleasure to spend time in the school, give the children a new experience and help pass on some of our skills.

“We always welcome the opportunity to engage with the community and the pupils at Washingborough have been great.”

Over the festive season, Lincolnshire Co-op will be collecting toys for disadvantaged local children, but need residents’ help.

The 13 travel branches of the Co-op will be collecting new, unwrapped toys to fill up “Santa’s suitcase”, then the suitcase will be given to a local good cause in time for Christmas Day.

It doesn’t matter the size of cost of the toy, as long as it is in new condition.

The toys will be donated to:

  • Lincoln Tritton Road – Schoeffer House, which helps homeless families in the city.
  • Carlton Centre, Lincoln – Action for Children, a charity which speaks out for the most vulnerable, neglected and disadvantaged children and young people.
  • Grantham, Horncastle and Sleaford – local Home Start branches. Home Start is a voluntary organisation which offers help to families with young children.
  • Newark – Children’s Bereavement Centre Newark, which supports children who have lost a loved one.
  • Long Sutton and Gainsborough – Local County Council’s Children’s Services
  • Spalding – Boston Pilgrim Hospital Children’s ward
  • Grimsby – Grimsby Hospital Children’s Ward
  • Louth – Grimsby Children’s Hospice
  • Market Rasen and Boston – Local branches of the Salvation Army

Lincolnshire Co-op’s Travel Group Manager Wayne Dennett said: “It’s easy to forget at Christmas time that not everyone is as fortunate as us.

“We’re encouraging all our customers to support the appeal, and make sure children in the area have the Christmas that they deserve.”
