BMI The Lincoln Hospital on Nettleham Road has scrapped the use of plastic and non-recyclable cups and has replaced them with recyclable and compostable versions.

Each year, the private hospital in Lincoln uses around 11,000 single use disposable coffee cups and 3,667 plastic water cups which are then thrown away.

By the end of November 2018, patients and visitors will be offered recyclable paper water cups and compostable paper cup for hot drinks, which break down in 30 days therefore leaving no adverse effects on the environment.

The cups are just the latest in the hospital’s drive to become more environmentally friendly, having already replaced plastic spoons with wooden stirrers.

Jason Hession, head of hotel services for BMI Healthcare said: “Our previous tea and coffee cups were either Styrofoam or double-walled plastic-lined cups, while our water cups were plastic.

“None of these break down properly in the environment and we at BMI Healthcare share concerns over the effects of plastic on our wildlife, our oceans and in the food that we eat.

“By moving to the new recyclable cups, we hope to contribute to the long-term health of our planet and hope we inspire others to do the same. And of course we will continue to use, wash and re-use crockery as far as possible.”

Two new industrial units being built on land near the A46 in Lincoln are on track to be completed by March 2019 .

The construction company Lindum is currently completing the build at Newark 46 in Witham St Hughes on behalf of developer and regeneration specialist St Modwen.

The plans for the development were approved earlier this year by North Kesteven District Council. The development will be more than 95,000 square foot of warehouse and manufacturing accommodation within one of the region’s main strategic employment locations.

The site is in a prime location on the A46 dual carriageway, providing links to the East Coast sea and airports and the national motorway network.

St Modwen’s plans include 830,000 square foot of commercial space with 45 acres of remaining development land.

Robert Richardson, senior development manager at St. Modwen, said: “We are really pleased with the progress being made on-site. This is currently the only speculative scheme of this scale on-site in Lincolnshire and will provide the much needed employment space across the region.”

Lindum construction manager David Frankish said: “The project is going well and that it’s on target for completion in March. The two steel frames are now up. We have started cladding on the larger unit and are just about to start the cladding on the second.

“The aim is to get the shell of the units completed and weather tight as soon as possible. Then we will move on to the rest of the project and the amount of labour we have on site will increase.

“So far, things on site have progressed incredibly well and we are on schedule for our target completion date.”
