Kids can go swimming for just one pound per session at Yarborough Leisure Centre this month.

Active Nation, who run the centre in partnership with City of Lincoln Council, are trying to get children to have fun and keep fit at the same time.

Up until July 2010 when it was stopped, children benefited from the government ‘s Free Swimming Initiative. Active Nation says it is “on a mission to persuade the nation to be active”.

The price reduction applies to those aged between 5 and 15 years old. Under 5’s swimming is 95 pence a session and savings can also be made on Family Swim tickets.

There’s a 25-metre main pool at Yarborough Leisure Centre, which has three diving boards. For younger children and less experienced swimmers there’s also a smaller training pool.

Yarborough Leisure Centre has many casual swimming sessions across the day. Full timetable details can be found on its website.

The bandstand in Lincoln’s Arboretum

Music lovers can enjoy a free concert by the City of Lincoln Band at Lincoln’s Arboretum on Sunday, June 12.

The group will be performing in the bandstand from 2-4pm, playing an eclectic mix of music ranging from traditional brass numbers to modern pop classics.

The last time the band played at the Arboretum was in 2003 when it re-opened after a £3 million investment to refurbish it.

Bandstands were incredibly popular in their Victorian heyday. A crowd of over 10,000 people are said to have attended the opening of the Arboretum bandstand in 1884. During the 1890s the park attracted over 40,000 visitors to open air concerts.

Ken Windmill, Musical Director for the City of Lincoln Band, said: “We’ll be performing a really broad range of music to the public on Sunday. Our play list includes songs from West End shows, some modern numbers by artists like Robbie Williams and, of course, we couldn’t not play a few classic brass band songs too.”

Caroline Pritchard, Community Services Manager at the City of Lincoln Council, said: “It has been far too long since the sounds of the City of Lincoln Band graced the Arboretum and we’re really hoping the people of Lincoln come out to support this free event and enjoy all that the park has to offer.”
