On July 4, a national initiative is encouraging people to buy more from their local retailers. The scheme has been set up to highlight the diversity of businesses across UK High Streets.

The event is promoted across the nation, with the aim of people to buy at least one item from a local store.

Local trade associations are also behind the scheme, which have been organised to help maintain a strong community spirit and boost retailers’ footfall.

Jennifer Hollingworth, Business Manager of Flowers by Suzanne in Bailgate, said: “Local customers are our lifeblood and are absolutely vital to our business, especially when lots of shopping is now done online.

“We always make sure our local customers are looked after and value them very much,” Hollingworth added.

Matt Corrigan, Chief executive of Lincoln BIG, added “Our independent retailers are the ones that make shopping in Lincoln really special.”
