WH Smith gets self-service machines

Express till: WH Smiths is one of the first High Street retailers to add self service tills to its store.

A popular newsagents in Lincoln’s city centre has installed three self service machines (pictured) in its store.

WH Smith on Cornhill, a retail chain selling newspapers, magazines, books, stationery and confectionery,  set the machines live on July 6.

The aim is to stop people having to wait in long queues by allowing them to scan and pay for their items themselves.

The move makes WH Smith one of the first High Street retailers in the city to add self service tills to its store.

Supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda also have similiar machines, aimed at people with less shopping.

However, for those that do not want to use the machines, there are still two manned tills to use.

WH Smith spokesperson, Kate Prout said: “It’s early days, but so far the customers have really liked them, and we’ve got a positive response so far.”
