Video: Behind the scenes at the Lincoln Magna Carta vault

Magna Carta vault: Documenting the commemorative ‘topping out ceremony’ of the new Magna Carta vault at Lincoln Castle, a new video is giving an inside look at the historic works.

A new video documents the commemorative ‘topping out ceremony’ of the new Magna Carta vault at Lincoln Castle and gives an inside peek at the works.

As previously reported, an official ceremony revealing the vault took place on May 29. The promotional video gives a closer look at the work in progress.

The work, which forms part of the £22 million Lincoln Castle Revealed project, is being carried out by heritage construction company Woodhead Heritage and Lincolnshire County Council .

The video highlights the challenges of the construction and a glance back as far as the building and the document’s origins.

Mary Powell, Programme Manager for the Lincoln Castle Revealed project, said: “The castle was designed to keep people out, so actually getting all the materials and machinery in is a challenge in itself.”

The video also features Keeper of Muniments at Lincoln Cathedral, Dr Nicholas Bennett, and Education Officer at Lincoln Cathedral, Carole Bennett, who produced Magna Carta: A Lincoln Story.

The book commemorates Lincoln’s strong connection with the historic document.

Paul Staniforth, Site Manager for Robert Woodhead Ltd, said: “For all the contractors that work here, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. And this is something that is going to be here for another 200 years.”
