Lincoln roads closed as cows make bid for freedom

The great escape: Two Lincoln roads were temporarily closed by police in the early hours of this morning due to heavy traffic – but not because of cars for a change.

Two Lincoln roads were temporarily closed by police in the early hours of this morning due to heavy traffic – but not from vehicles.

Birchwood Avenue and Skellingthorpe Road were taken over by a herd of cows at about 12.45 in the morning.

Paul Wilson, who lives nearby, captured the herd wandering down the street on his phone.

He said: “I awoke to a brief blast of a police siren and flashing blue lightLooking out of the window I did not expect to see a small herd of cows at the end of the driveway.

“I went out for a closer look, by which time police had already managed to move them on as far as the junction of Birchwood Avenue and Skellingthorpe Road.

“About half an hour later police had succeeded in herding the cows off the main road and into an adjoining field that normally only has horses in it.”

At this stage it is unclear exactly where the herd escaped from, with the nearest place to have any cows down a side street off Skellingthorpe Road, on the opposite side of Catchwater.
