A baby’s car seat, an axe and needles were among items dragged from the River Witham in Lincoln by volunteers on Saturday, April 2.

A group of around 13 people gathered on the banks of the city centre waterway to clean up the area.

The event was organised by the Lincoln RiverCare group – a collaboration with Keep Britain Tidy and Anglian Water.

Numerous bags of litter were hauled out of the water and surrounding areas with cans, bottled, wrappers and an American football among the items found.

Kevin McCarthy, Lincoln RiverCare group leader and Anglian Water employee said: “The River Witham is a key part of life in the city.

“It’s a place to be enjoyed along the walk to work and it is a corridor for wildlife too. We hope the event organised will encourage local people to love the River Witham.”
