North East Lincolnshire Council has spent thousands of pounds cleaning up ‘mindless’ vandalism from historic shelters in Cleethorpes.

Thugs spray painted a number of crude and infantile images on the shelters at Kingsway, which have been there since around 1906.

Every single one of the shelters was vandalised, and in need of repairs by the council’s street cleaners.

The council began the clean up process on the afternoon of Thursday, January 5, with the cost likely to run into the thousands of pounds.

Councillor David Watson, portfolio holder for energy and environment at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Mindless acts of vandalism like this cause unnecessary upset for local people and visitors to the resort.

“Cleaning up after these louts is an expense we could all do without and this criminal behaviour is spoiling everyone else’s enjoyment.

“These shelters were undergoing refurbishment but this will set back the improvements.

“The cost of repairing the shelters is expected to run into thousands of pounds and comes at a time when the council is already under financial pressure.

“If anyone has any information about this crime, please come forward and call 101, the non-emergency number for Humberside Police.”
