A 27-year-old Polish man has been found dead at the Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre in Swinderby near Lincoln.

The Home Office confirmed the man’s body had been found on Wednesday, January 11, but would not make any further comments while investigations into the incident were open.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a 27-year-old Polish man who was detained at Morton Hall immigration removal centre was found dead on Wednesday, January 11. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family at this very sad time.

“As is the case with any death in detention, the police have been informed and a full independent investigation will be conducted by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

The PPO has jurisdiction for the investigation of all deaths occurring in the Home Office immigration detention estate.

IRC Morton Hall is run by the Prison Service, on behalf of UK Border Agency holding male adult detainees aged 18 years and over subject to deportation, who require secure conditions.
