A man has been praised by police after he saved a driver from drowning after their car crashed into a river.

Steve Jones, from Woking in Surrey, came to the rescue of a female driver from Spalding at around 9.15pm.

Police were alerted to the scene and a rescue mission began.

Steve went into the water and rescued the driver, who has now been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

In a Twitter post, Steve said: “That could have ended horribly.

“She is lucky to be alive, the water is so cold!

“I’m sure anyone would have done the same.”

Police later praised Steve for his bravery.
