Humber Bridge signs installed after 134 near-misses in five months

New signs have been erected at Humber Bridge in a bid to reduce accidents after almost 150 near-misses were recorded in the last five months.

According to a report looking into the issue of incidents on the bridge, since May 25, 2017, there have been seven minor accidents and 134 near-misses.

Now signs, stating ‘No Reversing, No Stopping and No U-Turns’ have been put up in a bid to reduce this issue.

A spokesperson for the Humber Bridge said: “Although we take every incident at the Humber Bridge extremely seriously, it is important to put these figures in context.

“With around 120,000 vehicle crossings every week, proportionately the number of drivers who reverse or drive the wrong way up the approach lanes to the toll plaza is extremely small.

“However, we understand that such incidents pose a great threat to other drivers and could have tragic consequences, which is why we are working with East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire Councils to address the issue.

“This will involve improving the signage on the approach to the tolls to remove any confusion over which lane to use, providing a clear route for non-toll traffic to exit the southbound plaza area.

“We are also reminding drivers that under no circumstances should they reverse or perform a U-turn in the lanes approaching the toll plaza.”
