Grimsby takeaway shut down after rainwater flooded kitchen

Inspectors discovered poor hygiene standards too.

A Chinese takeaway in Grimsby had to be shut down after environmental health officers discovered rainwater pouring into its kitchen.

China House on Pasture Street was shut down by North East Lincolnshire Council on Valentine’s Day following a customer complaint.

It reopened on Tuesday, February 20 after the immediate dangers to public health had been removed.

Food in the takeaway had been exposed to the rainwater flooding onto the work surfaces when owners failed to properly repair a hole in the roof.

Officers from the council’s Food Health Team also found the premises to be poorly maintained, dirty and of imminent risk to public health.

The council issued a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition notice on February 14 and the premises were ordered to close.

Grimsby Magistrates’ Court upheld the decision and ordered the business owners to pay legal costs of £501 at a hearing on the following Monday.

Food hygiene officers are now working closely with the business to help improve standards.

Cllr David Bolton, portfolio holder for Safer Communities and Public Protection at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Our food health team protect consumers from businesses who ignore the law and put their customer’s health at risk.

“In this case they were able to intervene and shut the takeaway down thanks to a complaint from a customer.

“They are now working with the business to give them the direction and information they need to stay within the law and keep their customers safe.”
