Improvement works on Grimsby hospital junction to start next week

Fourteen weeks of works to expand and improve the junction leading to the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby will begin on Monday, March 26.

It will give better and faster access to the hospital from the junction of the Scartho Road, Forsythia Drive and Cragston Avenue.

An additional lane will be created to give two lanes in both directions. The traffic signals will also be replaced.

Some landscaping works will be carried out with trees getting replaced, and the junction will be widened into a strip of hospital-owned land.

Access to the hospital will be maintained throughout the 14 weeks of improvement works, but there will be temporary lane closures and traffic lights, as well as extra staff to ease congestion at peak hours.

The final phase of works will require some night-time road closures.

Cllr David Watson, portfolio holder for energy and the environment at North East Lincolnshire Council, said:  “This is a busy junction and struggles to cope with the volume of traffic at peak times with its current layout.

“We need to upgrade the junction so it can cope with more traffic as more homes are built in the Scartho Top area.

“A new controlled crossing will also be installed to make it easier for people to reach the hospital. At the moment they have to rely on breaks in the traffic and it needs to be made safer.”
