Car crashes into train barrier in Lincolnshire village

One person was injured

A car crashed into a level crossing barrier on Friday, resulting in a road closure which could be in place until as late as tomorrow evening.

Police were called at 11.05am on Friday, September 21 to Caistor Road, Holton-le-Moor.

Caistor Road is currently closed near the level crossing.

The driver, a woman in her 70s, sustained minor injuries.

Work is ongoing to repair the barrier and police understand that the closure may be in place until 6pm on Saturday, September 22.

Diversions will be placed at the B1205 at Nettleton and the B1434 at Claxby Moor.

Local resident Will England saw the aftermath.

He told The Lincolnite: “When I first went out, three of the barriers were down, but one was leaning over in the wrong direction so I could see it had been hit.

“I also saw a new silver Ford Focus sideways across the road which was smashed in and it looked like the vehicle had hit the pedestal of the barrier.

“It is a horrendously fast stretch of road and I am amazed there are not more accidents. Occasionally Network Rail have speed cameras here, three times in six years, and people are often in excess of 80mph, so something needs to be done.”

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We were notified at just after 10:50am that a car had crashed and damaged the barrier at the level crossing at Holton le Moor. Trains were halted until Network Rail engineers could attend and carry out an inspection. Following the inspection, trains were able to run at slow speed, from just after 11:30am.

“To protect the safety of pedestrians and motorists the crossing is currently closed and the local authority and Lincolnshire Police have put in a road closure. This will remain in place until Network Rail engineers are able to repair the barrier and pedestal which were damaged in the accident.”

This was the second crash in the district on Friday morning as police were called to another crash at 8.42am at the A46 Gallamore Lane junction in Market Rasen.

A police spokesperson said: “This was a damage only collision between two cars. Vehicles were recovered and the road reopened at around 10.30am.”
