South Common travellers ignore council order to vacate

Around 15 caravans are on the field

The City of Lincoln Council will now seek a court order to evict a group of travellers who have been pitched illegally on the South Common for a number of days.

The group of around 15 caravans were first spotted on the field towards the end of last week.

A reader told The Lincolnite that the travellers had pitched up and it looked like they had “broken a fence near the toilet block” to get onto the South Common.

People in the area at the weekend said the metal gate securing the space was wide open.

Officers from the City of Lincoln Council issued the owners of the caravans with a notice asking them to vacate the area on Friday, August 31.

The local authority are now seeking a court possession of the land and an injunction to prevent the travellers from pitching up on the city’s green spaces in the future.
