Scunthorpe nightclub to become shop, cafe and offices

‘Without investment the club risks closing and the building becoming derelict’

One of Scunthorpe’s well-known nightclubs is set to change after approval was given to turn it into a shop, cafe and offices.

Owner Scott Slingsby submitted the plan to change the use of the Britannia nightclub, Frodingham Road, to North Lincolnshire Council.

Mr Slingsby said in his plans that the club has fallen victim to “widespread and acknowledged failing trade” in the nightclub scene.

Now, the authority has given permission for the plans to go-ahead.

The proposals will now see the inside of the 111-year-old building remodelled to create multiple use.

This will include offices, shops, a cafe as well as a new mezzanine floor at first floor level with rooflights.

Known locally as ‘The Brit’, the club was first opened in 1907 as a traditional ale house by Melbourne Ales.

In 2010, Mr Slingsby invested an estimated £1 million transforming the landmark building at the corner of the High Street and Frodingham Road.

The transformation included a ground floor bar and a fire floor nightclub.

But in October 2017 the freehold of the building was put on the market for a reported £650,000.

The applicant said in his plans that the proposal would make “viable” use of the building and protect its future.

“The proposals will see significant investment into the centre of the town, bringing much needed, high quality commercial space to a central, sustainable location,” he said.

“The alternative uses are vital to secure the life of the building, as the current use is no longer considered financially viable.

“Without investment and alternative uses, the nightclub is at risk of closing and the building becoming derelict.”
