New play area to replace Lincoln youth centre destroyed by fire

The council wants something positive to rise from the ashes

A new play area will replace a youth centre in St Giles destroyed by fire almost four years ago.

The City of Lincoln Council is inviting people to have their say on designs at the St Giles Community Centre on February 17 from 2.30pm to 6.30pm.

In September 2016, the St Giles Youth Centre suffered catastrophic damage following arson.

The centre was used to provide a number of services to the local community but has remained vacant ever since the fire.

Once chosen, final plans for the play park will be submitted to the council’s planning department, with the intention of work to begin in April 2020.

Councillor Ric Metcalfe, the leader of the City of Lincoln Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for children and young people in the area.

“The fire in the area was devastating, however we hope that building this play park on the site will enable us to see something positive rise from the ashes of the former centre.

“This also highlights our commitment as a council to the estate and we look forward to meeting with the community to discuss further.”
