Attempted murder arrest after shooting in Newark

A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after another male was allegedly shot at a site not far from Lincolnshire.

Police were called to Tolney Lane in Newark shortly before 4pm on Wednesday, June 17 after a report that a man in his 30s had been shot to his upper body and assaulted with a bladed weapon. Police said it was a targeted attack and a cordon remained in place at the scene on Thursday while detectives continue with their enquiries.

Police said the people involved are known to each other and the victim was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham with non-life-threatening injuries. He was discharged from hospital on Wednesday evening.

Nottinghamshire Police said that the incident is not connected in any way to the Top Valley shooting on Tuesday night where two men were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. That incident remains under investigation.

Detective Inspector Steve Wragg, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are still in the early stages of our investigation and we are working extremely hard to understand the full circumstances of this incident.

“Following our swift response to this report we have arrested a suspect in connection with it who remains in custody where he will be questioned.

“Our enquiries have so far led us to confirm that this was a targeted attack, resulting in a firearm being discharged, and the people involved are known to each other.

“Fortunately no-one was seriously injured on this occasion but we treating this incident extremely seriously and we are urging anyone with any information about what happened or those responsible to please get in touch to help us understand what happened.

“Clearly every time a firearm is used in an offence it is extremely serious and people are understandably concerned. Thankfully this type of incident is rare in Nottinghamshire and I’d like to reassure people that we are working tirelessly on this investigation and we will have an increased police presence in the area over coming days to reassure and engage with local people.”
