Village knits thousands of poppies for Remembrance Day

Heighington have covered the railings at their church

Heighington village near Lincoln has been busy knitting two thousand poppies for a display.

Residents have covered the railings at St Thomas’ Church in the display after spending around 400 hours creating them.

It is to mark the centenary of the First World War and to remember those who served and died for the country.

This is the second year that the village has taken on the project and are hoping to make it even bigger next year.

Jane Dunning told The Lincolnite: “We have twice as many poppies this year so we now have around two thousand.

“It’s nice that it’s increased for the centenary year and that we have more displays. The poppies are a significant achievement.”

Diane Shenton knitted around half of the display and told The Lincolnite: “They are sort of like my babies and I parted with them with great sadness really.

“I even came out at around 11pm last night [after we put them up] to make sure that they were alright.”
