Future labour patients in Bardney Ward at Lincoln County Hospital will soon be able to give birth in a more comfortable environment.

RAF Cranwell Non-Commissioned Aircrew Course 243 of A Squardon strapped on their trainers and biked their way toward a foetal monitor.

The monitor can reduce contraction pain, reduce the equipment surrounding the mother during birth and record heart rate, contractions and uterine activity.

“We chose to donate to the labour ward because three of us have had children in the last four months and co-organiser James Thompson’s wife, Diane Thompson, is a midwife on Bardney Ward,” said Dave Brown, the event organizer.

13 participants used static bikes to complete a 1010 mile journey over June 5th and 6th. In total the bikers raised over £2,000 pounds over the course of two days and roughly over £1,200 with sponsorship and auction held previously.

Bardney Ward will receive 80 percent of the money earned and the other 20 percent will go to RAF church St Clement Danes in London and RAFA base Rothbury House.

“On behalf of Bardney Ward, I extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Non Commissioned Aircrew Course 243 of A Squadron, for the time and effort they spent participating in this endurance event,” said Katie Lascelles, ward manager.

This summer the Lincoln City Council’s Sports Department is encouraging young people to get outdoors and be active. From August 6th to September 3rd there will be planned activities to get Lincoln’s youth off the sofa and into the playing field.

A sneak peek of the events came in the form of the garden party fun day on June 4th at the Arboretum. This event hosted competitions for 50 participants in kwik cricket, rounders, five-a-side football, agility challenges and dance classes.

“It was great to see so many young people come along to take part in the activities,” said Keith Taylor, Senior Sport Development Officer at the City of Lincoln Council. “There was a really great atmosphere and the winners went away with medals as mementos from the day.”

With the help of the Abbey Neighborhood Team, Abbey Access Centre, the Lincoln Voluntary Service Centre and Lincolnshire Police the event was claimed as a success.

The excellent weather meant everyone had fun: “The volunteers also really enjoyed the event, it got them up to do something active and said it encouraged them to volunteer again,” said Dianne Slapp, Area Coordinator.

The Arboretum and other community centres will also be hosting events later this summer. The will offer similar activities to children aged 7 to 14 at £2/day. The events will take place on August 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th and September 3rd. A full list can be found here.

Community Centres hosting these events are: Moorland on Mondays, Sudbrook Drive on Tuesdays, St Giles on Wednesdays, Bracbridge on Thursdays and the Arboretum on Fridays.
