Two Lincoln mums have won a national award for their business, Storybook Days.

They won the Best Local Activity in the children 5-12 years category in the sixth annual What’s On 4 Little Ones awards.

The award celebrates the best activities, classes, volunteers and venues from throughout the UK as nominated and voted for by parents and parents-to-be.

Developed in 2010 by Sarah Hollomby and Leanne Taylor, the company provides creative workshops for children in the Lincoln area to encourage reading and writing.

Storybook Days is inspired by well-known children’s books, and activities include, drama, craft, games, storytelling and outdoor events.

The activities are developed for primary aged children, specific to each different age range. Storybook Day deliver their workshops in schools, libraries, and at events.

On receiving the award, Sarah Hollamby said: “It was a great award ceremony and we were delighted and surprised to win.

“The awards acknowledged the work of some of the biggest organisations who support parents and babies, including the NCT and Water Babies, so it was great we were part of the event.”

Co-partner, Leanne Taylor commented: “It has been an exciting two years, we have seen work grow and develop, allowing us to deliver in some interesting and varied venues, some of which include, Riverside Theatre in Louth, the Usher Art Gallery and the Drill Hall.“

She added: “2012 is our busiest year to date, in the last month we have taken popular books such as The Borrowers and The Secret Garden to Ascough Fee Hall, The Big Fuzzy to Spalding Library, and The Magic Far Away Tree and Kensuke’s Kingdom to a Boston School.”

Construction staff at Lincoln College have built a mural to commemorate Peter Roberts, an ex staff member of the college who made a large contribution to the Bricklaying department.

A commemorative stone built into a mural will be unveiled to mark the 10th anniversary of Peter’s death.

The unveiling will take place on June 23 — the Lincoln College open day — where a series of construction competitions will also feature.

Terry Coatsworth, a colleague of Peter’s commented: “Peter created a fantastic brickwork environment in Temple Building with no equal in the country. He was a well respected person and well known by many builders and architects in Lincoln.”

Peter Roberts made contributions to the bricklaying trade. He designed structures for students whilst working at the college and was made head of the department in the 1990’s.

He was an influential member of the Guild of Bricklayers and was awarded an MBE for his contributions to bricklaying education and training.

He also took part in the Hanson Creative Crafts competition, held annually in the late 1980’s and 1990’s, often collecting first or second prize.

The stone that will hold Peter’s name and dates has been donated by Lincoln Cathedral. Jackson Building Centres has donated the bricks, and The Guild of Bricklayers is funding the cost of the carving of the stone.

At the Lincoln College open day, students will be taking part in competitions covering each college department, which includes: brickwork, painting and decorating, plastering, joinery and plumbing. The winners from the competitions will receive essential tools and vouchers to help pursue their chosen career.
