With over 520 sheep at the Lincolnshire Show it can be hard for visitors to separate the good, the baaaad and the ugly.

But there’s no need to be sheepish, The Lincolnite spoke to judge and Lincoln Longwool expert Steve Higgins to find out what makes a star studded sheep special.

“There’s two main components to the Lincoln Longwool,” Explained Steve Higgins, “One in the size of the sheep, they’re the biggest British breed of sheep.

“So they have to be great big sheep with a flat back and strong legs.

“The second thing is the wool, the clue’s in the name, but it’s not a soft wool.

“The Lincoln is famous for its use as carpet making wool so it has to be really strong and really hard and heavy, and that’s the key thing.”

Jayne Southall, CEO of the Lincolnshire Showground and Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, said: “It’s a great agricultural show, we have our livestock and the equines.

“It’s a great day out for children and lots of schools participate and get involved.

“But also it’s a great opportunity for businesses in Lincoln to shout about what they do.

“In the Lincolnshire Kitchen we have local chefs and local producers showing us what they’ve got.

“Really, it’s all about showing off what’s great about Lincolnshire.”
