Lincoln Waterside Centre hosts Olympic Torch

Torch preview: Lincoln shoppers could get a glimpse of a past Olympic Torch in the Waterside earlier today.

The Waterside Shopping Centre played host to a special visit from an Olympic Torch on June 18.

Shoppers were allowed to hold the Olympic Torch from the 2006 Torino Games and have their photo taken.

The event was brought to Lincoln by the Olympic torch relay sponsors, Coca Cola, as part of their countdown to the Games.

Coca Cola are hoping events like this will bring communities together and get the public more involved in the Olympics.

The Waterside’s marketing coordinator, Chantelle Henderson, said: “Having the Torino Olympic torch at the Waterside Shopping Centre is a massive coup for us.

“It’s a brilliant event in itself for Lincoln, and a fantastic opportunity for the local community to see an Olympic torch ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Torch passing through the city centre on Wednesday, June 27.”

The Olympic Torch will pass through Lincoln at around 5.10pm next week from the south of the city, travelling up to Yarborough Sports Ground.

There will be a special event held for city residents, before the torch stays overnight in the cathedral.

On June 28, it will visit the castle for a breakfast event with schoolchildren, before leaving the city towards Saxilby.
