Lincoln group appeal for extra time to finish £1m Birchwood green space plan

Big Local: A Lincoln community group is set to be granted additional time to come up with proposals for green spaces in Birchwood.

A Lincoln community group is set to be granted additional time to come up with proposals for green spaces in Birchwood.

Birchwood Big Local Group was allocated £1 million back in 2012 as part of a lottery-funded initiative to spend on community projects over a 10-year-period.

The group have consulted with residents and propose to create a community garden and play area off Melbourne Road, and to improve open spaces on Jasmin Green.

It has been suggested that the land off Jasmin Road would be put into a community land trust, allowing a housing association to build affordable rented homes for the elderly which would provide income to maintain other facilities.

The group were given one year by the city council to present detailed proposals for the sites in September 2014.

Despite some progress, particularly on the Melbourne Road site, the plans are not yet at a stage where the council can make an informed decision on whether to transfer land allowing Birchwood Big Local to proceed with the development.

It is therefore recommended that the deadline for detailed plans to be submitted be extended to January 31, 2016.

The group have confirmed that this will allow them sufficient time to provide the required detail.

The council’s Executive will decide whether to approve an extension at a meeting at City Hall on October 26, from 6pm.
