Council unveils new homes for over 55s after £1.25m investment

A new residential development for over 55s has been officially opened in North Hykeham after the local council recognised a growing need for investment in housing for the elderly.

North Kesteven District Council marked the completion of the £1.25 million development of 12 bungalows, named Holland Court, on Wednesday, August 17.

The site Kesteven Court site in North Hykeham, which had previously been a plant nursery, was given planning consent in May 2014.

Comprising seven one-bedroom and five two-bedroom homes, the development was built by the council’s contractor Carmalor Group PLC.

The site is at the rear of an existing elderly persons’ development, with residents of the new and older schemes sharing a central amenity space.

Figures in the last census in 2011 show significant increases in the 60-64 and 65-74 age ranges in the district.

The council predicts the number of people aged 65 and over living alone in the district will increase by 67% between 2014 and 2030.

Councillor Marion Brighton, Leader of NKDC, said: “Holland Court is typical of the council’s ongoing determination to ensure the ready availability of quality, affordable and comfortable housing for all.

“There is clearly a need for this type of property and this location gives the development long-term sustainability with excellent access to shops, services, recreational pursuits and public transport.”

Mark Brown, Joint Managing Director of Carmalor Group PLC, added: “This is the first project we’ve worked on for NKDC and throughout it has been a positive experience for all the team at Carmalor.

“Overall the project went well, was a great success that has delivered good quality homes for the benefit of the local community and new tenants.”
