Plans for a Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre pub restaurant and KFC drive-thru on Skegness seafront have been given the go-ahead by councillors.
Councillors on East Lindsey District Council’s planning committee approved the plans for the hotel, pub and drive-thru complex on Pier Field.
The development will also include car parking for 166 vehicles and is expected to create around 90 year-round jobs in a variety of roles.
Councillors had broadly given their backing to the proposed development.
Portfolio Holder for Coastal Economy, Councillor Steve Kirk, has welcomed the multi-million pound investment Premier Inn is making in Skegness.
He said: “As a council we are working hard to extend the visitor season and create more sustainable employment and a major national hotel and restaurant chain investing in Skegness shows huge confidence in the economy of the area.
“Working with the county council, the Environment Agency and our other partners in both the public and private sectors, we’re keen to ensure that Skegness and the wider coast is recognised as a good place to do business and that we seize opportunities that ensure the coast is well positioned for the future.”
However, some residents have raised concerns about how it would impact the seafront area of the town, arguing that Pier Field should be preserved for events.
Skegness resident Darrell Blackburn was more positive, saying: “With the developments on the seafront and the prospect of a new building in the Tower Gardens, and don’t forget the new development on Burgh Road, things are looking up… Skegness is coming to the attention of the national chains at last.”
Margaret Mcnally, who also live in the town, added: “Think it would be a good thing on the whole. Will certainly affect some of the B&B’s in the winter, but need more accommodation in the summer.
“The number of people wandering the streets looking for last minute hotel spaces this summer told its own story. Hope the parking is sufficient, as lack of spaces is becoming serious in peak times.”
