A Grimsby man has died after falling 500 feet from a cave in the Lake District.

The incident happened on Saturday, October 15 when the 50-year-old man fell down the front face of Dove Crag, near Glenridding.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) and Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team were called to the scene by Cumbria Police at 10pm.

The man was believed to have been camping with friends from Grimsby, and planned to spend the night at a popular destination called the ‘Priest’s Hole’.

It has been reported that the man slipped from the shallow overhang and fell around 150 metres.

Mike Blakey, Patterdale MRT leader told The Mirror: “The man, who had slipped from the ledge, had fallen approximately 150 metres vertically and had sustained fatal injuries.

“The helicopter flew direct to the scene and by using its forward looking infra red camera it was able to direct a member of the team directly to casualty’s location within minutes of arriving on scene.

“The helicopter was able to direct the team straight to the man’s location, approximately 50 meters below the bottom of the main crag.

“Our thoughts are with man’s family and friends including those were staying the night with him.

“No matter how many times we deal with such incidents they are always tragic and very sad for all concerned.”
