Just under 9,000 Lincolnshire residents have put their names to a petition calling for Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK to be cancelled.

Nearly one million people have signed the petition, including 8,972 people from the Greater Lincolnshire region.

The petition reads: “Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.”

It continues: “Donald Trump’s well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit.”

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister said that the petition had not changed the government’s stance on the visit, stressing that the invitation had been extended and accepted.

The government must respond to all petitions which have more than 10,000 signatures.

Any petition that receive more than 100,000 must be considered for a debate at Westminster.

President Trump has sparked outrage among some in the first week of his presidency, especially through his temporary travel ban on those travelling to America from predominantly Muslim countries.

Any visit also threatens to be derailed given Trump’s recent row with Prince Charles over climate change.
