Fines for dog owners who fail to pick up their animal’s poo could increase to £100 if proposals put forward by East Lindsey District Council are implemented.

The council has launched a public consultation as it prepares to replace the Dog Control Order that exists in East Lindsey with a Public Space Protection Order.

This means dog fouling fines in the area could rise from £75 to £100.

Under these guidelines, owners could also be fined the higher amount if they fail to keep their dogs on leads in public areas or taking dogs on areas where they are not prohibited such as certain beaches and play areas.

A person given a fixed penalty notice for any of these offences has 14 days to pay.

If payment is not received within the 14 days the authority will take legal action against them.

The maximum fine if found guilty in court is currently £1,000.

At present East Lindsey has Dog Control Orders in place on the main beaches at Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea and Skegness and some play parks managed by the District Council.

The consultation will run until June 21. For more information visit the website.
