North Hykeham used car dealership to become new Co-op store

This story is over

A used car dealership in North Hykeham has been sold to Lincolnshire Co-op after owner Martin Cragg announced his retirement, 50 years on from his first job in the motor trade.

Martin’s Motor Company on Newark Road in North Hykeham has been sold for an undisclosed sum for redevelopment into a Lincolnshire Co-op convenience store.

Mr Cragg and his wife Elaine have owned the business, run alongside long-term colleague Debbie Ross since they bought the premises in 1999, expanding their business and moving from Hykeham Service Station.

After 34 years working in North Hykeham, Martin Cragg said: “It is sad to close the business and say farewell to our many loyal customers who have become friends over the years.

“The motor trade has changed a great deal since I started as an apprentice motor mechanic in 1969.

“It is very competitive with the advent of car supermarkets and online companies. It seemed like the right time to retire.

“We plan to travel more and spend time with family in Yorkshire, Scotland and Spain.”

Langleys Solicitors who assisted the Craggs with their move in 1999 have again acted in the sale of the premises to Lincolnshire Co-op.

Peter Horner, partner in commercial property at Langleys Solicitors, said: “Mr and Mrs Cragg have provided a great service for more than three decades to many customers. We are very pleased to have supported them in the sale of the business as they plan their retirement.”
