An RAF parade through the streets of Stamford has been cancelled at the last minute on police advice, after the threat level was raised from severe to critical.

Personnel from RAF Wittering were due to take part in a freedom parade on Thursday, May 25.

The base in Cambridgeshire is three miles south of the Lincolnshire town.

RAF personnel were given freedom of the town in 1960.

A statement from RAF Wittering said: “On the advice of Lincolnshire Police, RAF Wittering has taken the decision to postpone the parade marking the freedom of Stamford.

“Although we are not aware of any specific threats to Stamford or RAF Wittering, it is our belief that a better date for the parade would be more appropriate. This is in line with the police guidelines.”

The RAF is looking at holding the parade at a later date.
