Lincolnshire Police are providing a chance for people to give up their weapons in a bid to promote safety in the county.

Unlicensed or unwanted ammunition, imitation weapons or war memorabilia can be handed in to any police station, as long as its packaged and bagged safely, until July 10.

Anyone who is elderly, without transport or infirm, can contact the police on 101 and they will come and collect the firearm.

In 2014, 132 weapons were handed in across the county as part of the last firearms surrender.

Temporary Superintendent Phil Vickers said: “This is a chance for people to really think about whether they want to hold on to their weapons, and as a reminder to check that they still have the legal right to do so.

“One less firearm means one less opportunity for tragedy. The potential for the weapon to cause accidental injury, to fall into the wrong hands or be used in a suicide is removed.”

Police have urged that people should contact them if they know someone that has a firearms illegally or if there is concern regarding someone in possession of a legal firearm.
