Skegness Grammar School told to improve after inspectors criticise teaching and leadership

The school has been told to improve by inspectors.

A grammar school in Skegness previously rated as ‘good’ has been told to improve by inspectors who have criticised its teaching and leadership.

Inspectors from Ofsted visited Skegness Grammar School on Vernon Road on September 26 and 27, publishing their report on October 16, and grading the school as ‘requires improvement’.

Ofsted’s inspection framework reviews five areas and the school was graded as ‘requires improvement’ in four areas:

  • Effectiveness of leadership and management – Requires improvement
  • Quality of teaching, learning and assessment – Requires improvement
  • Personal development, behaviour and welfare – Good
  • Outcomes for pupils – Requires improvement
  • 16 to 19 study programmes – Requires improvement

In the report, inspectors said: “The quality of teaching is not good enough across the school to ensure that all pupils make consistently strong progress.

“Senior leaders and governors have not ensured that the school has maintained the high standards that inspectors found at the last inspection.

“The most able pupils do not make as much progress as they should across a range of subjects.

“Students in the sixth form do not make consistently strong progress because the quality of teaching is too variable.

“Not all teachers consistently use the school’s assessment policy when marking pupils’ work.”

A spokesperson for Skegness Grammar School said: “Earlier in March 2017 we identified areas for improvement, which were noted along with our strengths by Ofsted recently, and have made excellent progress against these.

“The actions we are taking are leading to rapid and sustainable improvements in our school having recently celebrated nearly 100% of pupils achieving 9-4 grades in GCSE English and Maths and impressive A Level results which have led to even more of our students studying at top universities.”
