Two jailed for Grimsby murder

Two men have been jailed for the murder of a Romanian man in Grimsby.

Mihai Cernat died days after a violent attack when alcohol-fuelled Romania’s National Day celebrations with friends got out of hand on December 1, 2017.

He had suffered severe brain injuries.

The incident happened at a property on Oxford Street in Grimsby.

Florin Hapluic, 25, of Rutland Street in Grimsby was given a life sentence for murder, with a minimum of 12 years, at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday, May 16.

Iasmin Florian, 30, of Oxford Street in Grimsby was jailed for 13 years for manslaughter. He’ll have to serve a minimum of seven years.

Detective Chief Inspector at Humberside Police Stewart Miller said: “This was a tragic incident fuelled by too much alcohol and bravado.

“These men were friends and housemates, who had got together to enjoy a few drinks in celebration of a Romanian National Day but they didn’t know where to stop.

“A disagreement got out of hand and Mihai Cernat died in very unpleasant circumstances – the level of violence involved went way beyond what you would expect from a drunken argument between friends.

“Mihai paid the ultimate price and our thoughts are now with his family and loved ones, who have lost a much-loved son, brother, father and friend.

“I’d also like to thank all those who came forward with information and reassure those living in the area that the incident all happened within the house and there was no risk to the wider public.

“I would like to thank the team who worked on this investigation, quickly identifying what had happened, arresting those responsible and gathering the evidence to secure these convictions.”
